CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

The shop that sold Lachapelle was as quaint and whimsical as anyone would have imagined. It might as well have been lifted right from Rue Cler in Paris. The name Lachapelle was stretched above the windows in gold lettering, which was all the advertisement it presumably needed. There was a hint of Art Nouveau flair to the decor surrounding the sign, though not enough to seem too bohemian.

Through the paned glass on either side of the French doors, shelves and tables were lined with small, china figurines dancing, embracing, wooing, contemplating, and, daringly enough, even kissing.

Jane was once again in charge of Dot and Dash, much to her delight, despite the weather. She’d naturally have to stay outside, but Pen had a plan to bring the proprietor to the front door. She could see him through the windows of the door, already with a look of disapproval on his face as he eyed the Dalmatians.

The sign in the window reminded any visitors that the shop was open “by appointment” only. Pen knocked on it, giving him a questioning look. He frowned and walked over to open it for her.

“Are you Mr. Percy Dawson?” Jane had given Pen the name of the owner after making the appointment.

“I am, and I’m afraid the dogs are to remain firmly outside. I shouldn’t even have to say it.”

Dot and Dash paid him no attention whatsoever. They were too absorbed with the idea of potentially going on another walk.

So, he hadn’t been her attacker from last night it seemed. Still, that didn’t mean he couldn’t be Mrs. Abernathy’s murderer.

Pen studied him. He looked to be in his forties, handsome in an imperious sort of way, with a pinched nose, sharp eyes, and a mouth that seemed inclined to turn down at the sides. Beneath his very well-tailored suit, he was sturdy enough to have the strength to strangle a woman.

“Oh, of course, I just wanted to make sure I was dealing with the owner. You are the gentleman Dorothy Abernathy always personally dealt with, I assume?”

Any hint of disapproval on his face quickly vanished, replaced by an intense study of Penelope, with just a hint of suspicion. He was probably surprised she was an acquaintance of someone old enough to be her mother. “I am. Do you know her?”

“Yes, she recommended you to me.”

“She did?” Again, his surprise was understandable. His typical clientele was either much older or probably quite a bit younger than Penelope. That duality where one was so easily enthralled by the idea of love, or simply nostalgic for a different period.

“Yes, and I’m quite interested to learn more,” she said truthfully.

An overly obliging smile came to his face. “Mrs. Abernathy was a dear and valued customer.”

“Was?”

He blinked quickly, his smile fading. “Well, she had intimated to me that she would be going abroad for some time.” He forced a smile again. “Naturally, when she returns, I hope she will resume her relationship with our humble shop. Do come in.”

Pen gave a subtle glance to Benny as they entered past the door Mr.
